Thirty years ago today, Heartbeat City, the fifth album by the Cars was released. The Cars were a band that was popular with everyone, whether they preferred Judas Priest or Prince. I bought my copy late in March at the Record Bar in Las Cruces. It was on the day that cousin Andy and I saw the Romantics at the Pan American Center. With exception of their self-titled debut, Heartbeat City is probably their most consistent album. The five hit singles and a constant presence on MTV provided the soundtrack for my 16 year old life. I never got to see the Cars live. Bummer. Just hearing the late Benjamin Orr makes me real sad. Despite the fact that the boys made a fine reunion record just a couple of years ago, the absence of Bens singing disturbed the balance he shared with Ric Ocasek. I wore out this cassette tape in days of yore, smoking cigarettes at the Irvin High stadium, nights at the quarry drinking beer. Better catch the Blue Caboose...Heart Beat City. Its my life.
