This 4-minute safety story is worth repeating. It recalls how I nearly killed myself, and the doctor and nurse I was carrying that night. It occurred in early 1979. We were flying at night to pick up a 5-year old girl whod been beaten unconscious by her step-father. I exceeded my personal limitations and nearly lost it going IIMC in an Alouette III. The incident shook me to the core because up until that night Id survived flying 1042 combat hours in Vietnam 68-69 where Id been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Then 2 1/2 years flying in the Australian Outback, a year flying over the New Guinea Jungle, and 2 1/2 years as a senior instructor pilot for Bell Helicopter International in Iran teaching instructors how to instruct in various aircraft. I returned home after the Islamic Revolution accepting a job flying helicopter EMS at Hermann Hospital in Houston. It was on my first shift at Hermann where I nearly killed myself and the doctor and nurse who had entrusted their lives to me that night. I recorded this digital safety story this October at the Center for Medical Transport Research in Denver where, along with six other air medical professionals, we put together our personal digital safety stories which can be found on Youtube. There are 40 such stories on the Youtube channel now. Mine is entitled, THE WRONG STUFF. It is my great hope that people learn from my near-fatal mistake and are never, ever put in that situation any time in their flying career.
