This ABC piece was based on narratives from The American Slave: A Composite Autobiography, a huge undertaking under the editorial leadership of George P. Rawick. Writers employed by the WPA (A New Deal employment program) fanned out during the 1930s to interview former slaves. I read through the Georgia narratives while working on THE WAY IT WAS. Hard to find a complete set--they are definitely collectors items now. However, thanks to the net, heres a link to access the complete narratives as text or pdf files.
