This April 18th we will be featuring the works of mi Hermano Randell Piragua, leader of Orishabo! As a native of Cuba, Randell Villalonga has been playing percussion since he was 8 years old and is a master of Afro-Cuban rhythms. He studied at Gulliermo Tomas, Conservatoria de Musica de Guanabacoa and has played with world-renowned Afro-Cuban musical groups Yoruba Adabo, Los Papines, and Alaafia. He is the director and founder of Orishabo, a DC-based Afro-Cuban music ensemble performing traditional and modern Afro-Cuban music. His style is what he calls a Rum-bata concept, an innovative style mixing traditional Afro-Cuban rumba with a modern twist, which he affectionately defines as “la rumba no es como ayer” (rumba is not as it was yesterday).
