This Chuck Jackson song Any Day Now made me more than a bit - TopicsExpress

This Chuck Jackson song Any Day Now made me more than a bit melancholy at the end of Inherent Vice at the New York Film Festival screening last night. Melancholy in a way that only Pynchon, despite his surreal and slapstick soul, can manifest it inside you. That sad recognition of the incredible crush of gravity exerted by American power and money on its countercultural children, reminding you that this country is never what it says it is, and never was. A phantom, a vapor that had, if only for a moment, the impression of three dimensional reality. But, despite living in a country that says you can can do anything except for what youre told not to do (resist, defy, go against the grain), which increases by the day, that crushing force is only ever reactionary and terrified, and so never as powerful as it pretends to be. Its perpetually on its heels. The anarchic spirit of America isnt so easily snuffed out. From time to time I just need to be reminded of it.
