This Day in American HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!! Thursday July 4, 2013 1997 - The Sojourner robot rover, aboard the Mars Pathfinder, landed on Mars. Valerie Ambroise, a Bridgeport, CT honor student named the rover in honor of abolitionist, Sojourner Truth. 1876 - EM Bannister ~ (African painter) exhibits Under The Oaks at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelpha and is awarded the gold medal. 1910 - Jack Johnson ~ (first Black heavyweight champion) retains his championship by knocking out Jim "The Great White Hope" Jeffries, who had come out of retirement "to win back the title for the White race" 1881 - Tuskegee Institute ~ opened by Booker T Washington. 1827 - Slavery was abolished in New York. 1989 George Augustus Stallings was suspended from the the Roman Catholic Church. Stallings was suspended because he founded the Imana Temple African American Catholic Congregation, an independent church established to meet the needs of Blacks.
