This Day in Auto History 1.24.1924 Ford Motor Companys planned community of Kingsford, MI was incorporated as a village. The company owned vast forest reserves in the area to supply its needs for station wagon bodies, etc., and the new village was named for the manager of the works, Edward G. Kingsford. The Ford Motor Company factory had started to built wooden station wagon bodies beginning in 1931. During World War 2, Ford built a glider factory which manufactured more than 4,000 wooden frame Waco gliders for the US military. Scrap wood from the Ford factory was used to make charcoal. That operation was the foundation of the Kingsford Charcoal company.
