This Day in St. Louis History, October 8, 1878: The first Veiled Prophet Ball was held in St. Louis. The Veiled Prophet was founded by prominent St. Louisans as a local celebration in the likeness of Mardi Gras, as pageantry, floats, and costumes became a festival of excitement. The Veiled Prophet of Khorassan, a mysterious hooded figure that was truly a member of St. Louis’ civic elite, presided over the Veiled Prophet Ball and would select the Queen of Love and Beauty from among the civic debutantes. It had a dark side however, as in the wake of the 1877 general strike it was also used as a tool to reassert social hierarchy. The Veiled Prophet would come to represent philanthropic and community-centered leadership to some, while to many others it was an angry reminder of class divides, racism, and oppression.
