This *Friday, June 21 at 5:30 pm*, Mayor Destefano and President Levin of Yale will be complimenting one another on how good of a job they have done “improving” the relationship between the University and the City at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas at the Yale Art Gallery. One thing that is unlikely to make the agenda is the recent vote by the Board of Aldermen allowing Yale to buy portions of Wall Street and High Street from the City – streets that they will never pay a dime of rent for again even as the city faces a major deficit that has forced it to fire 55 public school teachers and raise taxes. Mayor Destefano, however, can still veto the deal if he wishes. So, this Friday, let’s go and remind him that over 200 people who signed various petitions, over 60% of respondents to a New Haven Independent poll and virtually every major community organization that has spoken out on the issue at all opposes this deal. The city needs to do a much better job of consulting residents before it sells off public land and Yale should be contributing more to the city through higher rents and, ultimately, fair taxation, not purchasing public land at fire-sale prices. *WHAT: DIRECT ACTION FOR MAYOR DESTEFANO TO VETO STREET SALES TO YALE..OUR STREET BELONG TO THE PUBLIC...WHO SAID THEY CAN BE SOLD ...
