This Ipomoea albivenia plant grows in the wild on some hills to the north of Polokwane. I photographed it at this time of year (late winter), but a few years ago. Here the plant grows in shrub form since there are no surrounding trees for it to climb up into, and it is bare of leaves. You can see the cotton-like balls of fluff here, in which the seeds are embedded. I think this is protection against the beetles that parasitize the seeds ... they have to dig into the fluffy mass and try to find the seeds! A few of them do succeed.
