This Principle of the Nguzo Saba is my favorite one to say. I SAY IT ALL DAY CUZ I LIKE HOW IT SOUNDS. Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves. This is a big one for me and my siblings Karema Greene (Akilah), Kamilah Williams (Ameedah) and Khalil Amin as well as for my children Khalil Jr. and baby girl Khaliah Amira. All around the world names are meant to give direction to where a person comes from and the history it represents. My parents having lived through the civil rights movements of the 60s came to the realization that our familys name (true name) had been lost in the middle passage, auction blocks, fields of Virginia and Georgia etc. They saw a need to give there children a name that had meaning, as well as point us in some way to our place of origin. If I had the money I would like to take a DNA test to find out where in West Africa and out side of Africa I hail from. Id like to Take a name from there. AFRICAN NAMES ARE HARD TO SAY! DONT FEEL BAD. If you currently call me (KYLE) ;-) THATS FINE ;-) many people do my dad does. lol https://youtube/watch?v=T35lGfijU6s
