This Saturday, I am a traveling to the Adirondacks to speak at the very first diversity symposium ever held there. My invitation to speak came from them finding an article (in the NYT) of my speaking on the issue of diversity, or rather, the lack there of in tourist destinations, specifically in the national parks, across the country. I have been vocal about areas where I have seen a failure to embrace diversity long before I was a blogger. It has been one of my lifes passions. I have been threatened, intimidated, and brought to tears over fear for the safety of my family for my stance on this issue in the past. There was a time when this topic became a very scary situation for me. And though I have been shaken, I have never stopped. It is a dream for me to be invited to speak not only as a woman of color who has experiences to share and lessons to pass on over this issues, but also as a travel professional, to help others understand and learn about the importance, both cultural and financial, in embracing and welcoming diversity into their community. I will also talk about the entities that I work with who embrace this ideology and are helping to make the tourism/travel message more inclusive and diverse. I am a bit nervous - this is never, ever an easy topic, or one people always want to hear, but I am so incredibly proud that it has lead me here. Symposium organizers say the following: “Issues of low-diversity in the Adirondacks is something many of us have been aware of and working to improve for some time” Paul Hai said in announcing the event, “but what makes this symposium different, and the intent of the planning team behind it, is that this represents the first effort across the Park to bring together in common conversation everyone interested in working on these challenges. Our hope is to foster an initiative going forward maximizing our collective efforts and creating a more welcoming and diverse Park than we could have achieved individually.” - See more at:
