This Saturday, I plan on doing a screening of all three episodes of Re: Cutie Honey. This is one of the titles that I’ve wanted to show pretty much throughout my time with AET for a few reasons: - Its credits include a lot of the same folks who worked on Dead Leaves, Gurren Lagann, Panty & Stocking, Little Witch Academia, and Kill La Kill, all of which we watched in club. - It was directed by Hideaki Anno, the same guy who did Gunbuster, and is about as far from Evangelion as it gets. - It’s based on the first magical girl manga ever written, and may elucidate some of the progression of the genre. - This show has never gotten US distribution, and people ought to know about it. - It’s by Go Nagai and therefore completely insane. - It’s really entertaining. Of course, there are reasons why it hasn’t been shown, including: - long episodes, short episode count - theres copious nudity - It’s by Go Nagai and therefore completely insane. So yeah, warning on that front. If you hated Kill La Kill or Gunbuster because of the fanservice, you’re going to have a bad time. But you folks are pretty chill; every time a show came along that we were sure was going to upset someone (e.g. Welcome to NHK or Dororon Enma-kun or Panty & Stocking), it hasn’t been a problem. The suggested venue was the classroom on the second floor of Whitaker Hall. Does that work for people? Does anyone have a better suggestion? I figure we can meet at 6, order food, watch the show, and then… watch another show? I have the original Cutie Honey series, for comparison. We could watch another Nagai OVA like Devilman, Mazinkaiser, or Getter Robo. We could pick another potentially offensive show that wouldn’t fit into the regular club block, or another Gainax property, or I could just randomly select some anime movie that I like. Thoughts?
