This Saturday heralds a great day for the York Lokomotive club, for this Saturday brings the debut of the Lokos newest venture, Lokomotive Athletic. Lokomotive Athletic will be a new senior squad for the club bringing in new talent and offering more players the opportunity of pulling on the red jersey of the York outfit. Straight after the Athletics debut, York Lokomotive will be entertaining Scarborough Pirates in the league. The club has come a long way and have put a lot of effort in getting this squad out. In this, the teams 6th season this feat can only be described as a brilliant step forward for York’s most friendly and progressive club. All the way back in 2008 a few blokes had an idea of introducing a new club into York’s rugby league ranks, to offer something different from the big 3 established clubs within the city. It has been a long a rocky road to get to York Lokomotive to be a reliable and stable club, in the past we have been made up a few Lokos only playing staff and mercenaries from the other teams from in and around York. Although with most rugby now going to summer, which Lokos were the first York team to do, those mercenaries since 2012 have now dried up and it has took the Lokos a couple of years to come out of the other side and create a Lokos only squad and mentality, which through hard work and dedication from numerous people, the Lokos have done with flying Red & White colours. It is a great achievement for the club to be able to turn out 2 squads and with a host of regulars unavailable through injury or holiday showing a depth and commitment that was only a pipe dream 6 years ago. Athletics Debut Lokomotive Athletic vs. Selby Warriors New Lane, Holgate, York, Sat 19/07/2014 1.00pm KO. This will be York Lokomotive clubs 99th game and they will be going for their 47th win, although it will be the Athletics 1st ever game and are hoping to be able to make it 1/1. This though will be no easy task as it will be a North Yorkshire derby against a strong and experienced Pennine league club in Selby Warriors. Though Selby’s Pennine league team won’t be at full strength and are out of season only playing a few games over the summer this is still going to be a very hard first outing for the Lokos new boys. York Lokomotive have met Selby once before in the York Cup losing 36-0, although this was in the Lokos worst ever season in 2012 in the middle of pre season, hopefully Athletic will be able to avenge that defeat or at the least put in a more respectable performance. Lewis Sharp will have the honour of leading the Athletics in their debut game on this his 36th appearance. There is a few players making there club debut in this game and hopefully this will turn out to be one of many games for the Lokos, they are Adrian Beales, Ben Pollock, Joe Clark, Nick Stokes and one of our brilliant coaching staff Martin Bellwood. Martin will be joined by other members of the coaching team in Simon Moat, Dean Winspear, Jason Dunn and also our John Hough. Hough, Dunn & Winspear will all be making their 2014 debut having played for the club in previous years, Hough has played 45 times and raked up 74 points with 13 tries and 11 goals, Dunn has played 12 times having previously played for Scarborough and coach Win will be making his 54th appearance. Also on 2014 debut having pulled on the red and white jersey previously are John Rushworth (12 apps), Dean Franks (20), Dave Oughton (22) and Danny Spencer (16) who has also amassed 36 points through 8 tries and a goal. Also competing in the Lokos Athletics debut is Matt Turner who is only one 4 pointer away from making 100 for the club becoming only the 4th person to do so. Yorkshire Men’s League Round 10 York Lokomotive vs. Scarborough Pirates New Lane, Holgate, York, Sat 19/07/2014 2.30pm KO. 2014 League Form: Lokos: W W W L W W W Pirates: L L L L L L L This will be York Lokomotive clubs 100th game and they will be going for their hopefully 47/48th win in the 2nd North Yorkshire derby of the day against a spirited Scarborough side. These 2 clubs have been going hammer and tongs at each other since they first met in 2008, with Lokos having the better of Scarborough in the past few years. Scarborough are the only team to have played Lokos in everyone of their 6 seasons so I can not think of a more fitting opponent for the Lokos 100th game. Two players will be making their 2014 debut, they are Jarred Smith who has played 5 times crossing the white wash once and slotting a brace of goals and Gareth Howell who has made 37 appearances with a return of 80 points with 20 tries. Ricky James who only joined the clb this year will be making his 10th apperance having scored 3 tries. Another player who joined this year is Prop Jamie Price who will become the only player to play in every York Lokomotive fixture this year. Tom Gargan will reach a massive milestone in turning out for the 50th time for the club having scored 20 tries in that time. Saturday promises to be a brilliant day for the club so everyone ever involved with the Lokos get yourself down and celebrate our great club.
