This Saturday, law enforcement and truckers throughout Canada and the United States will join forces to hold the World’s Largest Truck Convoy (WLTC) for Special Olympics. Starting at the Richie Brothers Auction (Range Rd 51 and Hwy 43); an expected 200 Semis, Tractor Trailers and other Big Rigs will load highways around Grande Prairie as they travel an approximately 45 km loop to celebrate their support of the athletes of Special Olympics. The International fund raising and awareness event, the WLTC, is a unique partnership between law enforcement and truckers to raise funds for Special Olympics so they can continue to train in year-round sports activities. Officers involved in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics have made the WLTC one of their annual signature events. Special Olympics has a way of bringing everyone together, setting aside differences and building communities of acceptance. The fact that Special Olympics can bring together law enforcement officers and truckers is a testament to how the athletes of Special Olympics are a true inspiration. The Grande Prairie leg of the WLTC is part of an international event which unites more than 1,000 truckers in 4 Canadian provinces and 15 United States, and collectively raised over $586,000 in 2013 alone. Truckers here in Grande Prairie travel their 45 km to raise money for the Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games. Join them at the Richie Brothers Auction or along the route and be a part of the celebration. Trucking companies and truckers who want to participate in this year’s event can visit the convoy’s web site at albertatorchrun.ca for more information and to register. The minimum donation to participate in the Special Olympics convoy is $100 per truck. Trucking companies can also sponsor the event to gain additional recognition. All people are invited to attend the route and event at Richie Brothers Auction at 11:00am, September 20.
