This Sunday, August 25, 2013 is the third anniversary of the tragic passing of our dear Sister Mary Campbell. While I am genuinely reluctant to impose the obligations found in some prayer chains, this one seems particularly well-aimed and well-timed. The prayer below which I hope you will take to heart and pass along instructs us to do what Sister Mary did effortlessly – namely, exude the presence of the Risen Christ. As our long-serving school principal, and later as teacher and prayerful confidant of Monsignor John, Mary’s witness for Christ was reflected in her compassionate administration of the school and in her own almost school child happiness. Sister Mary had a special fondness for the Cathedral honoring Our Lady at Knock. Indeed, it was commonplace to find Mary as a young girl drawn there for hours. Later in life as Mary worked as a Catholic educator among God’s most valued friends, spouses who proclaim the importance of Christ’s salvation by being open to new life, Sister Mary’s joy-filled nature absorbed a goodly part of her 74 years. Now, three years after her death, the sweet memory of Mary gives us a gentle daily reminder (and a gentle word was Mary’s trademark) to pause our hurried, virtual existence and see the authentic beauty of creation. In the memory of Mary Campbell, and all the members of the Sisters of Saint Louis, please join me in the prayer below. Thank you, Douglas Kmiec Those wanting to know more about Mary’s faith witness are encouraged to read Chapter 16 in Lift Up Your Hearts, entitled “Mary’s Sign” as well as Martin Sheen’s very poignant remembrance of Mary in the foreword to this book devoted in significant part to the continuing positive influence of Monsignor John Sheridan’s “theology of kindness.” The book is available on line at commongoodcommonground as well as Amazon and select bookstores, such as Barnes & Noble and Diesel Books.
