This TED talk is great material for a discussion. Jonathan Haidt argues that five foundations of morality have been identified: 1. Does the behavior reflect caring, as opposed to causing harm? 2. Is it fair, or reciprocal? 3. Does it reflect loyalty, and if so, to whom? 4. Does it reflect respect for authority? 5. Does it reflect purity? He goes on to argue that liberals focus on the first two, and are suspicious of the other three, while conservatives are more inclined than liberals to value the last three. I think hes right. And Id characterize myself as a liberal because the first two values are more central to what morality is or should be about than the other three, which are contingent or conditional. Haidt doesnt make that point; its my view. Would be delighted to know what people think about this, especially my conservative friends. youtube/watch?v=8SOQduoLgRw
