This Tuesday! A new project! We would love each one of you to attend. Where: Briton Plaza What: The Surrealist Writing Project This is a project where we will gather to write, together. To take this frequently isolated expression in a space that is ours and make it an activity of a collective expression and collaboration, in public space. Words when unexamined, solely used for a purpose of efficiency in communication, have the ability to separate; people, culture and ideas. The movement of surrealism which developed in 1920’s, saw a direct opposite potential in the familiar-objects we encounter in public and private space, words we use to communicate, anything in its original meaning and use was urged to be reevaluated, played with and otherwise disrupted. In an age of questioning reason people were waking up to another type of expansion in thought by moving past what each object or word “did” in a rational improvement of society, to to instead what it’s greater potential hid beneath this surface. To awaken one’s self awareness, understanding, expression, and a sincere connection to the universe and all its inhabitants. This project is thus following in the footsteps and dialogue of defamiliarizing the familiar, to ultimately stir and shift consciousness, break norms, awaken the minds, bodies and spirits of all people sharing an environment. How/Steps of Project: 1. Kia and I will be next to speakers playing instrumental music on Briton Plaza 2. A large piece of paper will be laid out with a multitude of markers and pens on the side to choose from. 3. Each person will be asked to listen to the music and freely write one line, any words of their choice, anything without any boundaries—in correspondence or reaction against the music (a nonverbal-language). The only rule that will be said is that while one person is writing the others will not look at their words. After the first person’s line is complete they will fold it over. On the other side of the fold the next person will write a line, and so forth to the following participants. 4. At the end I will turn off the speakers and read out loud the complete poem. 5. Afterards we will gather around in a circle for a discussion of the poem, how it is most likely a complete expression (or not, what held anyone back) and the feeling of participating in such a writing event. When: 1PM We are excited. Hope you are too.
