This Wednesday night at Yestermorrow, please join us for a lecture by Jim Newman and Sarah Slaughter, 7pm. What is community resilience and why do we care? After Irene and Sandy, Katrina and the Marathon Bombings, drought in the West and the Polar Vortex, our communities are called on more and more to take care of us – the citizens – and to do it with less and less money. With this as a context, how can we work to make our communities stronger so that we can all thrive in the face of changing conditions and unexpected disruptions? Jim Newman and Sarah Slaughter will look at different ways to characterize communities, including mapping important attributes of the population, natural systems, and built environment with an eye toward understanding the needs of people and the hazards they face. They will also present some frameworks for improving the resilience of our buildings and communities, including our critical infrastructure systems and most vulnerable populations. The goal of this discussion is to empower us, as citizens and designers, to make our world more resilient in ways that bring benefits to our everyday lives, right now.
