This afternoon I crossed the halfway point of NaNoWriMo 2014, 25042 words. 15 more days, 25k more words to go. The novel is coming along well despite having to retconn in a major character in the third chapter for dramatic resonance. Everything is now falling into place nicely. Pyrynne broke off a mile before we got to the lumber camp. Loremar was alert for, well, everything, and indeed, she picked up the scent of the camp before we ever saw it. Witless picked up the scent of more grass. We left the horses hobbled and carefully scouted the camp. We inched up to a ridge overlooking the camp, and then Pyrynne did something interesting. She pulled out a leather pouch containing a manna cube. She placed it in a necklace so the manna contacted her exposed throat. Then she cupped her hands like she was holding a distance looking lens. She rotated her hands until she had a good view of the camp. “How?” I whispered. “What are you…” “Shh,” she whispered, absently. I took it that concentration was a key component of working magic. Either that or she was being unusually rude. Considering the circumstances and our history, I presumed more the former than the latter. I didn’t have any manna on my person, but I had a lot of manna coursing through my… well, I had a lot of manna. I mimicked her activity and concentrated on the distant camp. I willed myself to see closer. Nothing happened at first, then all of a sudden I felt something pop deep within me and I had that deep blue glow from my fingertips, from my eye sockets. I tried again and this time, I saw fleas in the mane of a horse. I backed it out and saw the camp in all its glory. It was spectacular. “There he is,” she said. “Who?” “Gleming. He’s looking at a map on a table. The map is held down by rocks.” “I see it,” I said. She looked up, startled. “How did you…” “Shh,” I said, and grinned ever so slightly.
