This almost one-month baby girl is on the move, wiggling and squirming on her tummy, as she should be. Her elbows are behind her shoulders and her weight is forward on her upper chest and face. All these signs are normal for this age. However...... ...what I would like to warn against in this video is the following: 1. Babies this age do not have the head control to lift their head for long periods of time, and as you see in this video, she is sliding down the ramp of the bolster placed under her chest. She therefore has MORE weight on her face than she should and is getting frustrated about it. Keep baby on flat floor, or on your flat chest. 2. Babies this age do not have the range of motion at their shoulders to stretch their arms in front of them. A bolster is often used with older babies (3 months) to help keep elbows at or in front of shoulders. These young babies are supposed to have their elbows back by their sides. A bolster under the chest will therefore result in sliding forward and a frustrated baby OR, worse, sliding backward with extra pressure on the neck and face, a true safety/suffocation risk. Young babies do not need bolsters under their chests when on the floor. It is frustrating at best and dangerous in the worst case scenario.
