This article from CNN starts with 4-H stands for Head, heart, hands, health and apparently a fifth — for haters. Haters? Really? How can a person hate a youth organization that teaches them how to be leaders, the importance of caring for others, and that being organized is necessary for all aspects of life. As well how to speak in public but also to speak confidently when doing so, to care and treat animals well, that everyone is different and should be accepted for their differences, the responsibility of being an officer/member, doing book work, raising an animal, and that the power of positive thinking can allow you to do anything. This article also neglects to highlight that 4-H has other projects besides taking terminal animal projects. You can take non-terminal animal projects, you can take pottery, photography, clothing design, horseless horse, creative writing, or even a self-determined project. They learn about the importance of agriculture, ethical animal treatment, and about the food industry. Which a lot more people need to be educated on. Youth are able to grow through 4-H and make life long memories. They find who they are, what they have a passion for, and and what they want for their future. I got my start in 4-H, I did all three things listed above, and I cant imagine my life without everything it has given me. I wouldnt be half the person I am without my 12 years in 4-H. And an organization that can do all that should be celebrated not criticized.
