This book has been brought up in a few discussions here. Ive just finished reading and my review follows. :) Thoroughly enjoyed this one. I love the stripped back style of the narrative, the wry humour and the way Chambers wrenches something magical from the mundane. If you’re looking for action-packed, plot twists in every chapter and roller coaster type angst, then maybe not for you. It’s a love story, but oh how this description feels so wrong and inadequate. The story opens with a middle-aged Christopher Flinders - redundant from the tax office - and trying to kick start life again in a rural community. He’s approached by a young woman wishing to research the life of his deceased editor. A time slip then, and we go back to those days of heady excitement when Flinders wrote a novel and his life became entwined with the editor of a literary agency, and more importantly, his wife. A brilliant supporting cast in brother Gerald and so many more. It’s a well-rounded novel with totally believable characters and my interest was held on every page as it built to a surprising and satisfactory climax. Recommended.
