This brings back memories of hurricane Gustav - it really screwed up Baton Rouge and Lafayette. We found ourselves on State Street in BR after a couple days with no power sitting at our porch to avoid the heat. Because everyone in the 5 or 6 block area of State St. lost power, we were all outside drinking and barbequing to make the best of the situation. What followed that evening was the singular most beautiful and soul-nourishing moment of my life. We could see a few faint porches lit with flashlights or candles but otherwise it was pitch black. It was silent except for the low hum of conversation and occasional laughter. No Tv, no Facebooks, etc. A few people were playing on guitars near us so Luke, Caleb, myself, and a few friends who were staying with us decided to start belting out Bohemian Rhapsody. Within seconds the houses around us joined in and it spread to what sounded like the entire neighborhood almost immediately. I cant describe the feeling of togetherness and tremendous joy that overcame me that night. At the end of that long day full of chaos and uncertainty, we came together both friends and strangers to sing to eachother in the darkness. It remains as both a metaphor illustrating the immense wealth of kindness and beauty hidden in each of us, and as a reminder that music is the language of my soul. To me, these are snapshots of humanity at its very best
