This building at 207 N. Third was the home of the Hellman Brothers Fur warehouse when this photo was taken in 1936. It had been purchased by Isadore & Milton Hellman from their cousin, who had been President of Wells Fargo Bank. In 1858, this building was occupied by the Wells Fargo Stagecoach & Overland Mail Company, & it was the site of two historic firsts. The 1st regularly scheduled cross-country stagecoach trip left this building on September 19, 1858; carrying six passengers, who paid $200 each. This was also the first official delivery of US Mail to the west, several years before the Pony Express. Since they took a southerly route, service was interrupted at the outbreak of Civil War, and a more northerly route was established. Being paid $600,000 a year, to this day, it remains the largest mail delivery contract awarded. This structure was torn down to clear the grounds for what would become the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial.
