This clip has been circulating for years on youtube. Its a great visual document of Cuban music played with a Nuyorican attitude.Tito Puente -timbales/timbalitos, Sal Cuvas - electric bass, Charlie Palmieri - piano, and Ray Barrettos incredible playing of a rebajador (the largest drum, what most people incorrectly today call a super tumba) as his principal time keeping drum. Because the clip is not high quality, it is hard to tell what the brands are of the drums Ray is playing, but they appear to be all wooden. Theres some great simpatico going here between these masters and Charlie Palmieris classic 4 octave Cuban style piano is in full effect. The video clip is an excerpt of a two part show that was produced and broadcast in NYC on PBS channel 13 back in the summer of 1980 that was hosted by opera diva Beverly Sills on the music of NYC. The memorable and frankly most telling part I remember of this episode of the show was when Ms. Sills asked Tito about his life and he talked about studying at the prestigious Juilliard School after his service in the U.S. Navy in WW II. Ms. Sills response was telling, Oh my God! So you have had musical training! The tune? Tito Puentes 1 chord opus, Picadillo, which for a short time was titled, believe it or not, Arthur Murrays Rumba. ;) https://youtube/watch?v=TSchf9CibLo
