Having many co-sponsors can be influential by showing support, resulting in momentum to move the bills through the legislative process. Please contact both your state representative and state senator (see below) and ask them to sign on as co-sponsors. Reducing Animal Suffering - HD 497 This bill would amend the existing animal cruelty law to clarify that animals must receive veterinary care if it is necessary to prevent or relieve their animals suffering. Sponsor: Rep. Kafka Animal Abandonment in Vacant Properties - SD 902, HD 1367 This bill will require that landlords and foreclosing owners inspect recently vacated and foreclosed units within 3 days for the presence of abandoned animals and notify an animal control officer or other authorized agent if an abandoned animal is found. Sponsor: Sen. Eldridge, Rep. Dave Rogers Preventing the Trafficking in Ivory and Rhino Horns - SD 648, HD 1935 These bills will clamp down on illegal ivory and rhino horn sales in by prohibiting the sale, trade and distribution of these products within our state, ensuring Massachusetts doesnt play a role in the unprecedented global poaching crisis. Ehrlich Updating the Law to Care for Seized Animals - HD 347 This bill will make updates/improvements to a law that allows a court to require a defendant to post a bond to care for seized animals in cruelty cases. It will help cities, towns and other entities that care for animals - for often long periods - during a cruelty prosecution. Sponsor: Rep. Campbell Protecting the Health and Safety of Animals in Cars - HD 1323, SD 1735 These bills will prohibit having an animal in a motor vehicle in a manner that could reasonably be expected to threaten the health of the animal due to exposure to extreme heat or cold. Sponsors: Rep. Ehrlich, Senator Montigny Strengthening Enforcement to Protect Outdoor and Tethered Dogs - SD 1231, HD 1370 These bills would strengthen the enforcement of a law that restricts the manner in which dogs can be tethered outside and prohibits certain cruel conditions. Sponsor: Sen. Jehlen, Rep. Dave Rogers Ensuring Humane Farm Animal Care - SD 466, HD 1371 These bills would prohibit the confinement of farm animals in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, or fully extend their limbs; veal crates and gestation crates for pregnant pigs would be prohibited. Dave Rogers An Act Relating to Dogs and Homeowners Insurance - SD 982 This bill would prevent insurance companies from denying or cancelling homeowners insurance based on the breed of dog owned. Sponsor: Senator Gobi An Act to Protect Puppies and Kittens - SD 974, HD 2126 These bills would prevent the sale of dog or cat less than 8 weeks of age, provide an improved remedy for the sale of sick dogs and cats, and regulate certain breeders. It will also ensure that pet shops only receive puppies and kittens from breeders that adhere to certain standards and dont have significant or repeat violations of the Animal Welfare Act. Sponsor: Senator Spilka, Representative Bradley Elephants and Bullhooks - SD 190, HD 1521, HD 111 These bills would prohibit the use of a bullhook (or ankus), commonly used to train elephants and prohibit the constant restraint of elephants by chains or similar devices.
