This cropped image of the Sun from last night shows a Major Sunspot with a lighter area in the centre, putting me in mind of a Lunar crater with a central peak. Obviously the central area must be hotter than the surrounding darker areas. I like the plage around the entire area. What I find interesting also is that against the solar surface sunspots appear dark, but if we could somehow pluck them from the Sun and put them in the blackness of space, they would shine as brightly as a star. When taking this snap, I just missed a plane travelling across the disc. How neat would that have been!
