This current impasse initially was fascinating, tense and exciting. It still is, somewhat but I dread to imagine how a DPP president and MCP majority parliament would actually behave and equally an MCP president and MCP majority. We have seen what majority politics looks like and can do. MCP is a poorly financed party with a perceived integrity which doesnt mean it would not engage another round of fundraising via public funds. The integrity of Peter is universally questioned and Lazarus enjoys overflowing praise be they on very superficial things like calmness or eloquence. As we have seen, being in office has proven to warp good people into not so great people, now governed by some sort of meta-reality increasingly detached from that which you & me experience. Its too early to prejudge these men for better or worse. 5 years on we may end up looking like emotionally unstable children. How they tackle Cashgate will be the most telling. Dont care who wins anymore. Malawi is in a very deep hole which this continued and prolonged spat wont help us escape from any sooner. MCP and DPP must, upon hearing the final result rest assured that 50% of the nation had their backs, move on and get to the more important task at hand. The next 5 years are the real test. With the business climate this crummy the sooner this is over the better. Whether governing or in opposition, furthering antagonism between the camps may result in a petty and deadlocked parliament. That is the history of these two parties in the past. While I was happy that the results produced a situation of President A having to deal with Party B in the governance of the country, I know that our politicians have demonstrated a knack for not having the interests of the public in mind in parliament, often just denying the sitting govt any legroom to implement any policy out of fear or hatred...or who knows what. For some reason I think this batch of political leaders would be willing to work together and hope they nip the historical and electoral rivalry in the bud given the hole we are in. Malawi is broke, it has no money and started defaulting on external debts just before the election. The burden will be placed squarely on you and me in taxes no matter who gets in. The currency will likely devalue and we will all be in a world of hurt. If the gravity of this is not lost on Chakwera or Peter then one hopes the winner can stem an innate urge to dip into an already empty pot and make things worse for us all. The greatest achievement of this election was the removal of PP. No point in going into why....we did it and for that the electorate took the 1st step needed to clean the mess. As many analysts have already stated, no matter who gets in..we are headed into troubled waters. The next 5 years will determine a lot. Let the law of the land rule. Then please lets move on and rebuild a very broken country. By Mwai Kasamale
