This date in 1953, At sundown, Julius and Ethel Greenglass Rosenberg are executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing, in New York, for conspiracy to commit espionage, relating to passing information about the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. Because the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons did not operate an electric chair at the time, the Rosenbergs were transferred to the New York State-run Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining for execution.
