This evening I was entertained by a new TV show, Crossbones. It appears NBC is trying to outfox Fox. They did a terrific job of it. Unfortunately, bring a period piece, one fraught with history and intrigue it may not do well in the US market. The biggest obstacle is the language used. Most Americans will find it foreign and difficult to follow, especially when it comes to context. The use of his Majestys form of English, especially in the early 1700s will clearly cause discomfort for American viewers who will not be able to use American slang to fill in the blanks. They will actually have to pay attention to what is being said or be lost. Since we Americans are the laziest on the planet, the inevitable fate, for the shows demise is preordained. If we have to think about something, we lose interest. To bad because it really is a terrific show. It is my desire that my point was well made. When John Malkovichs Blackbeard is asked why he no longer considers himself to be British, he gives a very complete answer. “(Im) a fellow with no wish to be governed, inspected, indoctrinated, preached at, taxed, stamped, measured, judged, condemned, hanged or shot.”
