This events in these photos took my breath away... It left me teary eyed and so thankful for these youngsters. This is an example of child-led learning. The course of this experience could never have been predicted by me. This is how it all started. A small group of children and I were reading a book together. In the story the little girl painted her feet purple. I had never read the book before. A child picked it off the shelf and it had come from the library a fee days prior. The content of the story was unknown to me. After we got done reading one of the kids asked if they could pInt their feet. I hesitated because we were nearing the end of our day and foot painting gets messy. But, we followed the lead of the children. And let go of our own hesitations and went for it. First we rolled out the paper and of course it looked like a runway so the teachers had to be supermodels for a minute. Then the painting started and it was fun but the really fun part started a few minutes into the painting experience. A little boy kneeled down next to the tub of water we were using to wash their feet off in. He asked if he could help wash feet. I told him to ask the little girl that was waiting for me to wash her feet if that was ok. She nodded. He gently washed her feet, checking between each toe to make sure the paint was gone. aaaaahhhhmazing! He tired of it after one foot and left. Another little girl came and asked if she could help wash feet. Sure!! She stayed with it for about 6 children and made sure every last speck of paint was gone. Some other little boys ended up drying the feet and I got to step back and watch it unfold. It got messier than I planned. But the relationships those children were building in those moments was priceless. This is,yet again, another moment that made me tear up with happiness!
