This excerpt from ijreview article sounds about right... In the United States, “conservatism” is the support of Constitutionally limited government, individual freedom, and free market (i.e. voluntary) economy. The opposite of these tenets are unlimited (or lawless) government, social engineering carried out by the state, and centrally planned economy. What is not “radical” is the idea of more government control over people’s lives. The idea that people should work where and how they desire, associate with whom they want, and live their lives the way they want, so long as they do not harm others, is the truly radical idea – and it happens to be one that those “conservative” Founding Fathers believed in.
