This fall I wont be assigning essays to students asking their argumentative opinion regarding images of 9/11. I have in my possession some of the best papers Ive ever read. 4 years worth of student opinions. Some agree that the imagery should be heroes but many of them argue for inclusion of the more difficult imagery to face. I allowed them to break free from the persuasive style in their essays final concluding paragraph to personally express where they were on that day. Some in 2nd grade. Some at work. Some in middle school. They always seemed intrigued to hear I was a sophomore in high school changing out after PE when the announcement broke over the locker room speakers. My students and I all agreed that we didnt truly understand the impact of what had happened until months, even years, later.
