This famous photo was taken by Kevin Carter , a South African photojournalist during the Sudan famine in March 1993 . The child in the picture is a little girl who ’ s trying to walk to her mother who was struggling to get food from humanitarian aid workers that brought them food . The little girl was so weak from starvation that she couldn’ t walk without pausing to gather her strength and at the same time stalked by a vulture . The photo was published in New York Times in March 1993. It became famous and won Kevin a pulitzer prize in 1994 , and he became notorious. It seemed that the world was not ready to accept such provoking and horrifying image... The vulture is waiting for the child to die so that it can eat it... This picture shocked the whole world. No one knows what happened to the child, including the photographer Kevin Carter who left the place as soon as the photograph was taken.... A few months later after collecting his Pulitzer, Carter committed suicide caused by depression... It is true that Kevin Carter won a Pulitzer Prize for his famous photograph. It is also true that Carter left the scene after taking the photograph without helping the child. However, it is too simplistic to suggest that he committed suicide as a direct result of his experience with this child as implied in the message. It is also unfair to judge his actions without having some understanding of the mans state of mind along with the terrible conditions in Sudan at the time the photograph was taken.
