This from my wonderful daughter Megan Skipworth. I’m thankful for our government and those who serve and defend it. “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” – Romans 13:1 No matter what we may think of our government, God makes it very clear that He is sovereign over it. He is the creator of all the universe and institutes all authorities on earth for reasons that He doesn’t need to reveal to us, even though some of us might think we know better. So honestly, despite the contentiousness of our current political climate, I’m not that worried. And that’s not because I think America is all-powerful or somehow extra blessed by God. Historically and Biblically, it would be foolish to even consider that (Jeremiah 25). Whatever God wants to happen will happen. I don’t necessarily agree with everything about our current government – in my infinite wisdom and expertise about domestic and international policy and economics, of course. But I am blessed to live in a nation where I am allowed to disagree. While Messrs. Jefferson and Locke may have believed that they are unalienable rights, what we really have are blessings in our freedoms. We have freedoms granted to us that were unprecedented throughout history. Even today, many people in the world are denied what we consider to be basic human rights. But nothing in life comes without a cost, and the human cost of our freedoms has been great. Many men and women have given their lives so that we can enjoy a life free from persecution. Jesus tells us that there is no greater act of love than laying down one’s life for another (John 15:13). So on this Veteran’s Day and every other day, I am grateful for the people who have fought to ensure that I don’t have to. In this I include my brother, three cousins, two uncles, both grandfathers, my father-in-law, and three great-uncles, all of whom have been humble about their service. I’d expect nothing less from people who were humble enough to put their lives on the line in the first place. Father and Defender, thank you for the blessings you have given us in this country. Help us to remain grateful for what we have and to give the honor due to those who serve us.
