This government and its supporters try to disguise the social problems they create and perpetuate by deploying a rhetoric of psychological inadequacy - blaming the individual. Blaming the parent approaches were something I fought hard to challenge when I worked in social services. I worked with other professionals from a range of disciplinary backgrounds to develop a therapeutic model that was inclusive and promoted equality - we delivered group work which was voluntary, participatory and based on genuine dialogue. The current government approach is about pre-empting the appalling and unacceptable casualties of their welfare reform - the framework is in place to ensure that parents are blamed for their childrens neglect from the state and not the government. The definition of abuse has been widened, giving the state more authority to intervene and to place more children into care and of course, to blame the parents for being poor. Same old Tories. Gove has said on many occasions in the right wing press that more children need to be taken into care. Childrens services are being privatised, so there is the profit incentive there, of course. More Tory donors making money at the expense of services for the vulnerable. Heres a typification: Better bonding between parents and babies could lead to more social mobility, as there is such a clear link to education, behaviour and future employment. - Conor Ryan, director of research at the Sutton Trust. No No No. Social policies that address poverty, policies that create adequately paid employment and adequately funded social security, policies that that embed equality of opportunity and extend social mobility are the way to address vulnerability. Poverty causes distress, which may lead to binding problems and no amount of confusing causes with effects will change poor outcomes unless the issue of SOCIAL policies that adversely affect life chances are addressed. That means getting rid of the corrosive Tory-led government. It strikes me as extraordinary that a group of aristocrats that are farmed off to public schools and often raised by nannies should be so concerned and focused on parental bonding as a reason for poor social outcomes
