This hag-ridden concern about what must be transcribed from the source in the form in which it appears vs. what can be regularized is not new with RDA. My copy of M.A. Shaaber’s catalog of the 16th century imprints in the collections of UPenn (1976) arrived in the mail (yay) & I note with exasperation that she transcribes the date from the title page in either Roman numerals or Arabic numbers, according (presumably) to the source. This makes the indexing under profuse authors (such as “France”) quite tedious to follow, given the small print imposed by the press.
