This has been Xianggang in the 70ies - in the eyes of residents as well as in the eyes of its rulers. Has it really be changed so deeply until the beginning of the talks for the return to China in 1982 & the ending & materialisation of it in 1997? And where has been the media focus on the Britsh rule all over that time? Hong Kong in 1970 was the fastest expanding city in the world, a city that lived on three levels - the expatriates, nearly always British who lived in almost complete isolation; the vast mass of Chinese residents struggling to get by and improve their lot; and finally the criminal and corrupt underside which not only fought among itself but also affected the life of everyone else in the Crown Colony through fear and corruption. Fighting to hold this in check – and by and large succeeding – were the Hong Kong police force. The British in nearly *complete isolation*, the mass of the Chinese residents *struggling to get by*, and the triades (nw making responsible for resistance against *democratic movement*) flourishing & *affecting the life of everyone*. Exactly, there wasnt ANY media focus on ANYTHING that happened in the *fastest expanding city* (faster than New York btw) of the world. Moreover there has been no infos about the life there beside economic development, richness & touristic glamour & you heard nearly nothing of a possible aggressive regime by British foreign rule during all the *expert talks* concerning the handover 1997 in German & other OECD media! Ah, it has been a harmonious & democratic government all that time ... (sarcasm off), its just a chinese (communist) propaganda to refer to a needed slow transition & harmonisation with Chinas Government rules & yes, there are rules, which have to be complied with. So, an important book, where you can learn a lot of facts by reading between the lines about how our *media democracy* is functioning - its an appearance in first place & China/Xianggang is used as a perfect foil/model to brainwash the people here.
