This has been puzzling me for a few years. I really dont think that most people like black dogs and cats less than dogs and cats of other colors. I wonder whether this problem of black adoptable pets being overlooked is relatively new and partly a result of the increasing use of the internet by shelters and rescues to publicize available dogs and by potential adopters to screen whos available and select the ones that they might want to visit in person. That is, black dogs and cats, although often among the most beautiful, usually dont photograph as well as lighter and mid-tone dogs and cats of similar features. Since Ive always picked my dogs from shelters in person, based primarily on their temperament, Ive never experienced this problem, but maybe when people live far from shelters, or when they have to rely on online photos and blurbs in order to choose which animals in foster care they want to meet, they have to do most of their screening online, where it may be difficult to see the facial features and expressions of uniformly dark dogs and cats.
