Responsibility is a decent word. In fact, when one says you are responsible, it an admirable compliment, is it not? But bearing responsibility has its own rules. That you are aware, that you make decisions that affect beyond you. That when you are right, those you benefit will smile, but when wrong, you carry the blame. That said, responsibility is what brings the weight that gives life its true meaning. Knowing that you have to worry beyond you, that you have to influence, think beyond you, and that your failure affects others who look up to you. Milan Kundera, in his book, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, says in life, the heavier the burden you carry, the more fulfilling life becomes. Well, that is a contradiction with what we imagine. We all hope to be light and free. And cruise the world with ease. We all want to laugh, and smile and be happy. Well, I took a thought at it. And it dawned on me, that perhaps the deepest and truest of the smile and laughter is one that comes from the heaviest of the burdens. When your smile was born from knowing that another one person smiled before you, when your glow in life comes from seeing other faces lit. When that happens, you know that, you carried a burden to lighten others, and in the end created your own light. Responsibility will be more often about sacrifice, and not privilege, but if you find privilege in sacrificing, then you have the purity of life. Have a reflective day friends.
