This horse arrived just before we were going out to ride. He had come all the way from Sherifs village, which is about ten minutes away in car. I wish we had known, we could have rented a truck to pick him up so he wouldnt have had to walk all that way! His feet were rock hard, which is quite unusual here, it turned out the owner had been putting his feet in clay to harden them. His left fore was particularly painful, no pus leaking out anywhere though. The owner was very concerned and wondered if there was hope or if the horse would be better off to be put to sleep. I was very touched to hear that. The horse walked in so bravely that we didnt realize how serious it was at first, but he had big problems picking up his feet. We only took his shoes off to prepare for trimming and as soon as he was out of the halter, he walked off the patio and collapsed. When we came back from riding he was still lying in the very same spot, but got up to have dinner. Many owners dont have space where the horses can lie down, and if they have the space its often a cement floor so the horses hesitate to lay down. So although we would love to have meter-thick straw beds, sand is luxury for many of them! (M)
