My personal (rather specific) interpretation is that of a metaphor for the fact that behind the scenes of the glossy family image sold to us by the corporate supermarkets (as perhaps represented here by the Santa figure in a supermarket shopping trolley) are European migrant farm workers and overseas garment workers (who are often *child* sweatshop wage slaves) being massively exploited, underpaid and overworked, so that these corporate capitalist supermarkets can offer food, clothes and various technical goods for a lower price to we Western consumers. As it happens my next academic social science essay will be covering this very topic. The assignment question being: Explore the view that a consumer society produces both winners and losers. So this is at the forefront of my mind at the moment (hence the especially specific interpretation).
