This image was shot on October 25 at the Walker sisters cabin near Metcalf Bottoms. The building in the foreground I believe was the cellar house or storage for items that needed coolness. It is a covered building lined with stones and has a trickle of water running thru the center. Butter, milk and anything else needing to stay cool were stored there. In old photos, a door was still present to keep out critters. A docent at one of the visitors centers warned me that this shack is a popular hangouts for copperheads. Speaking of serpents, the other building in the background was, I think the corn crib. If so, Im sure the Walkers would have boarded a black snake or two in that structure to control the varments (mice, shrew and rats). The crib held the ears of corn hand picked and stored in the building to feed person and animal over the winter months. The corn crib is just a few feet from the barn and also the Walkers cabin.
