This is Ali, the mom of our most recent litter. She is nicely demonstration anointing near the end of the video where it looks like she is throwing up. Anointing is a natural behaviour where hedgehogs will foam or throw up and spread it on their quills on their backs. Hedgehogs anoint for a few different reasons. 1. They really like the taste or smell of whatever theyre eating. 2. In the wild they use it as a natural protector. Hedgehogs have a very high resistance to toxic substances, so they are able to chew up something that is otherwise poisonous and spit it on their quills. That way, in the off chance something finds a hedgehog tasty looking, when they grab it the quills puncture either the skin on their feet or in the mouth and poison them with whatever the hedgehog has anointed himself with. Pretty cool if you ask me!
