This is Maiya Sykes, an Inner City Cultural Center Alumni baby. It was my Birthday, I went to Grand Performances downtown L.A. to an outdoor concert like I do all summer every year. We were to see Stones Throw Picnic. On the bill I read Maiya Sykes and joy spread thru my soul. I told Blue/Photographer to tell her I was here. The concert got rained out and we missed a concert we knew would be rocking. The Oracle Denise Lyles-Cook and Maia was there with me; but, alas...there was an after party in the basement of a club. The Concert got moved indoors without constrictions, commercials or interruptions. First I saw the piano player...Kenneth Crouch gets on stage and his vibe so reminded me of E.Kevin Jones my best friend in New York. I hung around the stage and in she came, Maiya and she rocked this basement out!!!! When she finished, heading back stage she walked right past me. I touched her arm and called her name, she turned and hugged me with the love of your own baby. She wouldnt let go, took me to her dressing room and I swear I aint had so much fun at a club since I left New York 15 years ago. She reminded me of her Cabbage Patch dolls, she had the ONLY ONE with Designer Clothes...created by her Auntie Tuesday. I laughed, Id forgotten; but special people who touch your life last for ever. Lynne and I are oh, so proud of her. C. Bernard Jackson the Father and Co-Founder of the first multi-cultural institute in the country birthed and trained many children. Jack taught all of his little black birds to take wings and fly and Maiya, born of the theatre did what she was told. From Jack with Love, Fly baby girl FLY!!! You have all of our support!
