This is a beautiful article! I understand poverty. As a child I vividly remember picking bugs out off my cereal box and mixing what was left with orange juice, because milk was too expensive. Cutting mold off a hunk of cheese until merely a sliver remained, and putting it on a slice of bread filled with holes from where Id pulled off its mold. I left home at 15 because i knew I could do a better job raising myself then the mother who was always working and the father(s) who were always abusing. I was denied opportunities for an education, took buses through bad parts of town to work, and lived off of barely nothing (I remember those burritos well). Always trying to advance myself without money for decent clothes or lunch or even a high school diploma. I got out of the barrio because I was smart, attractive and stubborn as hell. I was a weeble (they wobble, but they dont fall down), and I used these attributes to get me into a decent career and hook up with my (older) husband who could help me survive. I know for a fact, that if I wouldve had 1 less attribute to call my own, I most likely would have died there. This taught me to never assume I could live someones life better than they are. Everyone is struggling to find their way, and I hope to always provide a step up for those who need them.
