“This is a brief statement regarding the mistranslation of a book title. This mistranslation has become widespread and we now see many of our Salafee brothers and sisters using this mistranslation as logos, class/seminar titles, and more. This is due, in part, to the various social media outlets, which are, in truth a double edged sword. While much good can be spread very quickly, errors and misguidance can spread just as quickly from those who do not have true concern for the الأمانة العلمية (knowledge based trust), and are simply concerned with putting out information hastily without verifying the correctness of that information.” I came across an article written by the brother Raha ibn Donald Batts. The above paragraph is a piece from it. Spreading speech without verifying the correctness of it is a very serious problem in this time. Someone writes something on an internet forum then attributes it to a great scholar. Alone comes to salafee who loves that shaykh, he then copies it and spreads it. He does not concern himself with the possibility that it could be false, nor does he care who translated it. He himself has never seen the book quoted in his life nor does he know who is quoting. This is nothing but chaos. Imam muslim has added to the introduction of his saheeh the narration: It is sufficient that a man has lied who narrates everything that he hears. It is very dangerous indeed. Someone will take your speech and worship Allah by it, whether you were wrong or right. A man will take your words and apply a ruling pertaining to his wife and the wife pertaining to her husband. This is not a game show; it is real life, with real effects. Islam is not a toy that you show off with. I don’t say hide knowledge, rather the one who studied an issue and is certain about it, he shares it. Also the works of the scholars are present. If you mention a fatwa quote his name. The same with regards to our brother from the students of knowledge don’t take an article he has written and delete his name; everyone knows you did not write it. It is called plagiarism and it is a bad trait even amongst the kuffar.
