This is a brilliant piece by an Armenian, Raffi Khatchadourian. He writes about the Armenian Genocide as it was carried out in Diyarbekir though he has a more personal touch: his grandfather lived in the city during the genocide and he tries to restore the puzzle of how an Armenian survived when their very existence was a cause for murder. Both brilliant and heartbreaking, the piece will take you for a ride. A very long read but I seriously urge everyone to read it. Unfortunately certain Kurdish tribes have played a significant part in the genocide in mainly Kurdish areas. It is of fundamental importance that we understand why it happened and to make sure that it will never happen again. Note that it wasnt just Armenians that suffered during this genocidal period but also other minorities: Assyrians, Greeks and Ezidis. An Armenian told a Kurd (who was insulting him): We were the breakfast for them, you will be the lunch. Dont forget.
