This is a great article. I think every generation thinks that the next one has gotten soft. Ive thought about this a lot since the birth of my son. In todays parental society kids are becoming over-watched, overprotected robots. No one wants to see their child get hurt, bullied, or bully for that matter. But kids are becoming softer and softer at an alarming rate and IMO its our fault. When I was a kid, outside of school and sleep, I was under a watchful eye maybe a couple hours a day. I got in fights, fell off, ran into, and played in areas not made for play. By 10 I knew how to operate a gun, a boat, a chainsaw safely on my own. We had bottle rocket wars, played sports and rode bikes without any protection. On the flipside, our parents werent glued to phones, tablets and computers by the hour, they urged us to explore. When I was about 7, I was playing ghost in the graveyard with a few neighborhood pals when I got lost in the woods. I went on a 9 hour trek through the woods. I walked 13 miles (as the crow flies) away through the forest and found a police officer at a camp ground. He brought me home, my parents never knew I was gone until the officer rang the doorbell. Even then they were like Thanks for bringing him home. Moments were made for living, not capturing on a cel pic or being constantly monitored. We spend too much time looking at our kids through a viewfinder expecting greatness and too little time urging them to live visceral experiences that will burn into their memories forever. Sorry for the rant, read this, Im waking Xander from his nap so we can go start bon fires and blow some shit up!
